BN committee on Lynas insists plant is safe

Harakahdaily,19 June 2012
Jun 19: As widely expected, the parliamentary select committee (PSC) on Lynas Advanced Materials Plant (LAMP) today ruled that the controversial Australian rare-earth refinery plant in Gebeng is safe.

PSC committee which comprised of BN and other pro-BN members of parliament supported the issuance of the temporary operating licence (TOL) to Lynas Corp citing “scientific facts” to back their argument.

In parliament this morning, PSC said the Lynas refinery's radiation level was low at 2 milliSievert (mSv) a year for workers and 0.002mSv a year for the public.

The allowed annual limits are 20mSv and 1mSv respectively.

“This shows the rate (of exposure) at LAMP is low and safe,” it declared.

Pakatan Rakyat had earlier stayed away from the PSC accusing it as the federal government's ploy to legitimise the plant in the face of public concerns on its safety as well as an absence of any clear plan to dispose its radioactive wastes.

PSC however claimed that the RM2.5 billion plant had fulfilled legal and regulatory requirement.

It therefore said the TOL should be issued and a committee of NGOs and experts be formed to monitor LAMP operations.

Following the massive Himpunan Hijau 2.0 (Green Gathering 2.0) in Kuantan on February 26, the BN government formed the PSC on LAMP to allay fears.

The committee, headed by Higher Education minister Khaled Nordin, also consisted of Abdul Rahman Dahlan (BN-Kota Belud), Teng Boon Soon (BN-Tebrau), Nancy Shukri (BN-Batang Sadong), Liang Teck Meng (BN-Simpang Renggam) and Zulkifli Noordin (pro-BN, Kulim Bandar Baharu).
