THE lack of good sparring partners in the country has led to the Malaysian Amateur Boxing Federation (MABF) looking to India for a solution. MABF secretary Maulud Othman said the federation plans to send its boxers to Patiala, India, for a training stint from July to October as preparation for the 2011 Indonesia SEA Games.
Maulud said the trip would give the national boxers, who are mostly between the ages of 18 and 21, the chance to spar against strong opponents.
"India is well known for having world class boxers throughout the weight classes, especially in the heavier weight category," said Maulud who added that Patiala, India's equivalent of Malaysia's National Sports Complex in Bukit Jalil, also offers excellent facilities.
"Our boxers are still young and they need the exposure to help improve and build their character."
Maulud said the team going to Patiala would consist of seven boxers who have been representing Malaysia the past two years.
The national boxing team spent three weeks training with Thai commandos and also Thai Sports School boxers in Ubon Ratchathani prior to the Commonwealth Games and Asian Games last year.
Malaysia won two gold medals through Mohd Farkhan Mohd Haron (69kg) and Mohd Fairuz Azwan Abdullah (75kg) at the 2009 SEA Games in Laos.
