PETALING JAYA: It never occurred to Keh Pin Tat that his daily routine could win him a grand prize in a contest. The 40-year-old came across a tip-writing contest on energy efficiency published in the New Straits Times recently.
"I never thought of winning. I just wanted to share some useful tips with everyone. It was a pleasant surprise when my article won the judges' hearts," he said, when met at his house in Putra Heights here yesterday.
Keh, a unit trust consultant, was one of the contestants in the New Straits Times category who vied for the TNB-New Straits Times/Harian Metro Energy Efficiency Contest prize of RM3,000 and a 32-inch LED television.
His entry was selected from 10,000 first-round entries in the contest, which was open to readers from both newspapers from Oct 4 to Nov 1.
Keh said among the tips shared were on the use of power-saving features and solar panels for certain electrical appliances such as water heaters and air-conditioners.
"I also gave tips on how to optimise the load in a washing machine which can do wonders in saving electricity," he said, upon receiving the 32-inch LED television set which was delivered to his house yesterday.
Jointly hosted by Tenaga Nasional Bhd and NSTP Group, the contest requires participants to write tips on energy efficiency to combat the effects of global warming.
The second prize is RM2,000 and a washing machine, while the third prize is RM1,000 and an air-conditioner. Ten consolation prizes of RM500 each are also up for grabs. The contest's second round was open for entries till Dec 2, while contest 3 is being held from Dec 2 to Jan 3 next year.
