KUALA TERENGGANU: A 35-year-old Myanmar national was killed when four of his countrymen attacked him in his house at a construction site in Kampung Pak Sabah, Dungun, on Saturday. The victim was chatting with his 23-year-old nephew and a 21-year-old woman at 8pm when four construction workers rushed in and attacked them with parang and sticks.
The victim and his nephew tried to fight off the attackers while the woman friend ran off to get help from nearby residents.
State Criminal Investigation Department chief Assistant Commissioner of Police K. Manoharan said a villager alerted the Dungun police station after being informed by the woman.
When police arrived, they found the victim dead with slash wounds on his head while his nephew was seriously injured.
"The victim was a construction supervisor and our investigation showed there was a misunderstanding between the victim and his attackers regarding their pay," Manoharan said, adding that three workers had been detained.
He said police were still looking for more suspects and the murder weapons. Those with information about the four attackers should call the nearest police station.
In Kuantan, another Myanmar worker was killed by a colleague during a quarrel at a sawmill near the Kuantan-Kuantan Port bypass road here yesterday.
The victim was identified as Hlam Myo, 27, who had been working in the sawmill for two years.
District Criminal Investigation Department chief Deputy Superintendent Kamaruzzaman Jaafar said Hlam was believed to have been attacked with a parang in a workers' cabin where he was staying with six friends.
He said another worker called the police when he saw Hlam lying on a blood-soaked mattress inside the cabin.
Initial investigation showed that the victim had quarrelled with a 32-year-old man who stayed in the same cabin.
Police are now looking for the man. Those with information are requested to contact Assistant Superintendent T. Murugesu at 012-900 3661 or the nearest police station.
