House plans to summon Gayus Tambunan

House of Representatives' Commission III overseeing legal affairs plans to summon tax mafia defendant Gayus H. Tambunan.

Commission III chairman Benny K. Harman said the summon was crucial for the House to shed light on the unsolved tax mafia case.

"We will seek clarification from Gayus as to where he got his money and where he channeled it," Benny was quoted by tempointeraktif.com as saying Thursday.

Benny said that the summons was not a form of intervention from the lawmakers on the legal proceedings.

"This move should be regarded as political support for [law enforcers] to eradicate tax mafia," Benny said.

Benny said his commission would use Gayus' case as an entry point to trace other bigger tax mafia cases.

He called on the Corruption Eradication Commission to be proactive on Gayus' case.

Gayus Tambunan, former junior tax officer who was discovered to have more than Rp 100 billion (US$11 million) in his bank accounts, is now standing trial as defendant in a tax mafia case. Gayus received another charge of bribery after the media spotted him vacationing on resort island Bali, while he should have been behind bars at Kelapa Dua Detention Center in Depok, West Java.

Another commission III member, Nudirman Munir, from the Golkar Party agreed with the summons action.

However, Nurdirman said that the commission had yet to reach a consensus on the plan as many fear the move will backfire on the ongoing legal proceedings.
