[HS] 2.3 million visitors enjoyed Seoul Lantern Festival

Seoul City announced Monday that an estimated 2.3 million people enjoyed the 2010 Seoul Lantern Festival, which closed after a run of 17 days.

As many as half a million people visited the festival on the first weekend, quadruple the figure last year. Foreign visitors also amounted to 370,000.

Seoul City extended the event one more week due to a favorable response from citizens.

A total of 27,000 lanterns, including 567 works from 24 countries, including Japan, China, Taiwan, the Philippines, Hong Kong and Malaysia, were featured during the event this year.

Particularly eye catching were an 8-meter high Dachine Puta lantern from Goshowara City, Aomori Prefecture of Japan and a colorful lantern from China, the Shanghai Yewon Lantern.

Children were fascinated with the “Turtleship Lantern” and “Proro Lantern.” Other lanterns attracting visitors were those from Jeonju hanok village and North Chungcheong Province.
