Council to help boost number of experts(malaysia)

KUALA LUMPUR: The National Professors' Council will work closely with the Talent Corporation, which is under the Prime Minister's Department, to address the country's need for more manpower in the research field. Its chairman and the science adviser to the prime minister, Prof Emeritus Datuk Dr Zakri Abdul Hamid, said it was important for the country to build a critical mass of competent researchers, scientists and engineers to propel the country towards a developed and high-income economy.

In Malaysia, the number of researchers, scientists and engineers within the workforce hovers around 20 per 10,000 workers.

The ideal number is between 80 and 100 per 10,000 -- a figure prevalent in countries like Japan, Korea and Singapore.
Dr Zakri said that new policy initiatives would help to reduce the talent gap by attracting, developing as well as retaining the most talented human capital.

They include those announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, such as allowing selected Public Service Department scholarship holders to serve their bond outside the civil service and introducing a resident pass which will accord the holder the long-term right to live and work in Malaysia.

The council's deputy chairman Prof Datuk Dr Shamsul Amri Baharuddin said that the initiative should also include social science and humanities.

The council, launched by Najib in April, brings together the expertise of 1,426 professors from all public institutions of higher learning in the country.

Its role is to help the government by contributing input to various fields, in particular, to strengthen the foundations for formulating national policies as well as to ensure the success of the New Economic Model .
