Sultan to seek govt funding for bridge(malaysia)

KUANTAN: The wooden bridge over Sungai Kenau in Sungai Lembing, which collapsed after being swept away by strong currents on Tuesday, will be repaired. Sultan of Pahang Sultan Ahmad Shah, who visited the site yesterday, said the state government had approved an emergency allocation of RM1.5 million to repair the bridge and is expected to be completed in June next year.

He also said the RM280,000 suspension bridge, which was currently being built adjacent to the collapsed bridge as an alternative route, was expected to be completed by next week.

The ruler, who expressed his sympathy for the 20 families who were stranded since Tuesday, said he would also write to Rural and Regional Development Minister Datuk Seri Shafie Apdal requesting for RM60 million to replace this and two other wooden bridges in Sungai Lembing with concrete ones.
"I was informed that the wooden bridges are often damaged by strong currents and floating logs and debris.

"While awaiting the completion of the suspension bridge and the repairs on the wooden bridge, I will personally make a request for help from the minister.

"I've also talked to the village heads from the three affected areas, to agree to allow the first concrete bridge to be built here as this is a priority."

Since the collapse, the villagers had to rely on the boats provided by the Civil Defence Department, Kampung Batu 6 Kolek Village Development and Security Committee, and the army, for transportation.

The Pahang Waterworks Department also brought in clean water supply for the villagers since the pipes which ran along the bridge, were also damaged.

Earlier, Sultan Ahmad, who attended a state briefing on flood preparations, said he was happy with the level of readiness.

"We will have the use of nine helicopters from the police and the armed forces to help with the evacuation and bring in supplies.

"For Tioman, which is far from us, I've asked for another doctor to be stationed there and for enough supplies to be brought in to assist them during the monsoon season."

He also thanked the Federal Government for agreeing to his request to raise the daily allocation for those affected by the flood from RM8 to RM15.

"I know the difficulties faced by my subjects who are affected by the flood. They lost their homes and belongings while the farmers lost their crops.

Also present during the briefing were Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Adnan Yaakop and state secretary Datuk Seri Muhammad Saffian Ismail.
